The Arrival of Spring

In 2019 I stood in awe in front of Hockney’s painting The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate (2011) at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The size of the painting (32 canvases spanning a width of almost 10 metres and a height of about 3,5 metres), the bright colours, it made an impression on me. As if I stepped inside a forest, designed to make me happy.

The Man discovered that the Royal Academy of Arts in London currently sells a poster sized version of this painting for their exhibition of Hockney. He ordered it and it arrived just in time for my birthday, despite taking an adventurous detour through Canada.

Of course it will not have the immersive effect of the real painting, but it’s 1,3 metres wide. When I stand really close to it and pinch my eyes, I will surely be transported to that feeling of standing in front of that massive, happy forest.

Heavily inspired by watching The Great British Sewing Bee and admiring the creations of my Vogue Academy trained brother in law, I figured it was time to learn how to sew myself. So I asked for a sewing machine for my birthday. Last year. I didn’t get one and as I invested time and money in my own education in the field of data, there was no money nor time left to buy a machine myself.

This year, when my mother asked me if I still had something on my wish list, I repeated my request not expecting anything of it. To my biggest surprise my entire family chipped in and they bought me a very sturdy second-hand machine.

Daughter already provided some cloth to practice with. Her request: sleeping bags for her cuddly companions. I’ll see what I can come up with.

Never too old to learn.

– 30 bags filled with strawberries and blueberries for her classmates;
– celebrating a birthday in school for the first time;
– a butterfly painted on one cheek, a golden flower on the other, topped with the sun on her forehead, using the facial paint she got from her parents during breakfast;
– eating cake with her aunt who gifted her the biggest unicorn cuddly toy;
– pancake for dinner IN THE GARDEN*;
– fresh flowers in her bedroom.

And more fun to come this weekend.

*this season has been the coldest and wettest in many decades. This morning we woke up to a clear blue sky and by five in the afternoon temperature rose to 20°C. So a perfect day to turn five.

Birthday cake

We celebrated the Man’s birthday today. Daughter felt it wasn’t enough of a party. Too little play. That’s how things go when you had more than fifty of them, can’t invite people over due to a pandemic and have your birthday on a day full of work. Promises were made to play more tomorrow. It’s yet another national holiday (Hemelvaart), so clients are not at work anyway.

I will not play tomorrow. I will study hard for my Power BI exam next week. Luckily I restocked my sugar levels today. Plenty of energy to keep the brain motor running 😉
