Today I made my coffee in one of the mugs my parents gifted us a while ago. It is dark blue with the contours of a Van Gogh painting. We have three more in the same series specially created for the Van Gogh museum. We also threw a fifth mug in the bin in bits and pieces.

My parents didn’t buy the mug at the Van Gogh museum though. It is designed and ‘handmade in The Netherlands by Royal Goedewaagen. This company has a history of four hundred years making earthenware. Mid twentieth century they moved the entire company from Gouda to Nieuw-Buinen, a tiny village in the northern part of the country, which happens to be only seventeen kilometers from where my parents live. The perks of buying at the factory is that they sell products that are rejected for regular sale at a reduced price. So for a reduced price my parents get to give great gifts.
